Reading

At Guildford Grove, our curriculum develops language, ensures learning sticks and places reading at its heart. It is our intent that all children are able to read fluently with good comprehension and developed vocabulary by the end of Key Stage 2 so that they are truly ready for their learning in secondary school and beyond. We foster a love of reading through exposing pupils to a wide variety of diverse texts that are ‘windows and mirrors’ to their own lives. It is our intent to develop a wide reading community that includes pupils, staff, parents and volunteers.

Writing

At Guildford Grove, we believe that literacy should equip children with the skills needed to access all areas of the curriculum and enable them to communicate with clarity. Writing is an essential element of this communication and we strive to create life-long writers who understand the purpose and audience of each piece they create. We are passionate about developing vocabulary and actively encourage children to ambitiously apply newly acquired words across the broad range of writing opportunities we provide.

Whilst the core language taught at Guildford Grove Primary School is British Sign Language, we also recognise the importance of learning a Modern Foreign Language and have chosen to teach Spanish. We believe this is a valuable life skill, providing openings to other cultures and experiences. Our intention for this curriculum is that children are taught to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating, meaning they move onto secondary school and beyond with the key foundations in place to be more confident and curious learners of language.

As BSL is our dominant language across the school, Spanish lessons are taught in Year 6 where pupils are immersed in daily sessions during the Summer term using the Language Angels units of work.

We have liaised closely with our local secondary schools to ensure that our carefully chosen curriculum content feeds purposely into the KS3 (Year 7) units of work which pupils will encounter in the next stage of their education, as well as meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum.
